FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the apps

What is MatheArena?

MatheArena offers two student-centered math learning apps, MatheArena JUNIOR and MatheArena CLASSIC, which enable independent learning. In addition, there is a Teacher Dashboard for teachers. MatheArena was founded by two former math teachers.

Today, MatheArena is developed further by an interdisciplinary team of nine, specializing in sustainably improving math learning through digital learning opportunities grounded in learning psychology. The apps are aimed directly at students, while the Teacher Dashboard is tailored to the needs of teachers.

Alongside developing digital math applications, MatheArena is actively involved in research, exchange on teaching methods and educational partnerships, in order to continuously advance digital education and help shape it on an evidence-based footing.

Difference between JUNIOR and CLASSIC

MatheArena JUNIOR is aimed at grades 5–8 (Mittelschule and lower secondary Gymnasium), MatheArena CLASSIC at grades 9–12 (upper secondary Gymnasium and higher vocational schools such as HAK or HTL, i.e. secondary schools of commerce / technical colleges). CLASSIC also includes advanced math topics.

MatheArena JUNIOR:

  • For Mittelschulen (lower secondary schools, grades 5–8)
  • For lower secondary Gymnasium (grades 5–8)
  • Ideal for reviewing the basics in upper secondary classes

MatheArena CLASSIC:

  • For upper secondary Gymnasium (grades 9–12)
  • For higher vocational schools (HAK, HTL, etc.)
  • Includes advanced math topics

Tip: If you are unsure or have gaps in higher grades, JUNIOR can be used alongside CLASSIC to refresh the basics.

How does the traffic light system work in MatheArena?

MatheArena’s traffic light system shows you how confidently you master individual exercises within a topic. Each exercise is rated individually and marked with a color. It is not just about solving an exercise correctly once, but about consolidating content for the long term.

The colors mean:

  • 🟥 Red: The exercise has not yet been practiced enough.
  • 🟨 Yellow: The exercise has already been solved correctly, but is not yet consolidated.
  • 🟩 Green: The exercise has been solved correctly several times and is considered consolidated.

The colored dot next to an exercise shows you at any time how it is currently rated.

Is there a web version of MatheArena?

Yes, MatheArena is also available as a web version and can be used directly in the browser. In terms of content and functionality it is almost identical to the app: all learning content, exercise formats and your personal learning progress are also available in the browser.

The web versions can be reached at these addresses:

Some minigames are optimized specifically for touch controls. Since the web version is often used on a desktop without a touchscreen, these games can be somewhat harder to control there. In addition, the mobile app generally performs a bit better.

How does MatheArena work?

Students use MatheArena flexibly and individually: they choose topics freely or practice in a targeted way, an adaptive learning system automatically adjusts the exercises to their learning level and pace, and there is instant feedback after every exercise. Teachers complement this with the Teacher Dashboard.

For students:

  • Free choice of topics or targeted practice of specific content
  • An adaptive learning system that automatically adjusts exercises to learning level and pace
  • Instant feedback after every exercise
  • Multiple attempts with hints and explanations when mistakes are made

For teachers, the Teacher Dashboard offers additional options:

  • Creating digital worksheets
  • Targeted assignment of exercises to classes
  • Use in class or as homework

Optionally, duels and minigames can be used to consolidate mathematical concepts in a playful way and boost motivation.
